Never in a million years would you think that I would be the one to succumb to a long battle with illness. When we got the diagnosis, we simply stood there, completely dumbfounded. We couldn’t fathom how this was actually happening to our family.

Don’t ever think for a second that you should’ve noticed the signs or symptoms sooner. Or that I would have survived had we tried another form of treatment. This was all part of God’s plan. You’ve gotta trust me when I say that. I understand that it’s not fair. Why did I have to get sick and die? I know you struggle with this question every day. But, at the very least, I hope you realize that a terminal illness is what my soul needed to experience.

It taught me patience. Gave me strength and courage. Forced me to let go of control and accept help from others. It made me appreciate all the years my body was healthy. It opened my eyes to how much love I have for you and every single person in our tight-knit circle, who rallied together to help out where they could—who delivered dinners, drove me to doctor’s appointments, and who brought light into my life during some of my darkest of days.

The lessons I got out of being sick are too many to list, but just as I have evolved and changed for the better, so have you. Just as the loss of me has helped shaped you into the resilient and empathetic human being that you are today, so did my illness. One of the highlights of being in Heaven is that, at any time, I get to watch what you’re up to and see how much you have grown.

Know that I am whole again. Free from any pain or physical limitations. I’m more than okay, and I want you to be too. Live for me. Laugh for me. And remember that you are never alone.
